And God said...
The beginning and end of all things
is in God's hands. God speaks, and the universe (the entire realm
of physical existence) emerges from nothing by the power of God's will
which is expressed in His Word.
Scripture says (in Hebrews 1:1-3, KJV):
"God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the
fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son,
whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the
worlds; who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of
His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He
had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the
Majesty on high..."
From this and other passages of Scripture, we can see an astonishing
truth, namely, that "God ... has ... spoken to us by His Son ...
through whom also He made the worlds; who being the brightness of His
glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by
the word of His power..."
Every Christian who believes the Word of God in Scripture knows that God
created all things in and through His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ (see
the Gospel of John 1:1-14, for example). But here again we see
that the universe came into existence through the very will of God as
expressed in His spoken Word. And we see that the physical realm
we call the universe is also maintained or sustained by the very Word of
God.
Physicists struggle to understand how the universe came into being.
Some of them suspect that powers or causes beyond the universe not only
influenced our beginnings but also continue to exert power over the laws
of nature to this very day. They try to crack the mystery of
causes and effect. But such knowledge is difficult for mortal men
to discover and grasp.
In the mean time, we have a faithful record (thousands of years old)
that tells us much more about the universe than we might ever expect a
book on faith and salvation to reveal. We know that God Himself is
the power and cause of all physical existence. He spoke all things
into existence.
Well, almost all things. In the case of human beings, the Bible
says that God formed us, shaping us out of the very soil of earth.
And then He breathed into us the very breath of life. And we then
became a living being.
I have no doubt that all who truly wish to comprehend the origins of
life and of the universe itself would do well to know the Scriptures
well. The Bible has much to say about all things, even though the
focus and purpose of Scripture is to point us to Jesus Christ for the
forgiveness of sins and for the free gift of eternal life.
