showing a stuffed dog waving the U.S. flag, and the words: Proud
to be American.
Today our great land is in trouble. Voices both within and
without have predicted the total collapse of our economy and our
nation. Such a possibility appears closer than any of us
care to think.
But when were the odds ever perfectly in our favor?
America has seen its share of difficult times. Even before
we stood up for our freedom and declared ourselves independent,
we had already gone through many hard times. The original
colonists experienced bitter cold, ravaging diseases and other
devastating hardships. The war for independence was costly
and deadly in many ways aside from the battles themselves.
And there were other wars. Even a war between our own
states. Many hardships and difficult times that no doubt
made people wonder if this nation could survive.
How could we, a handful of impoverished makeshift fighters have
hoped to hold our own against the mighty British Empire, much
less defeat their forces? How could survive when we fought
an all out war against our own neighbors and families in the
Civil War? How could hope to succeed with the Allies in
beating the great machinery of Hitler's armies? Hard
times, bitter times, impossible times have been upon us before.
And we have survived.
We did not survive because we are a superior people, because we
are somehow braver, wiser or more determined to win. Our
courage, our technical insights and absolute stubbornness in the
face of hopeless circumstances are the gifts of God to help us
endure. He is the One who gave us birth as a nation.
He is the One who has called us forward in every generation,
even in spite of our foolish devotion to excess and unbelief.
It is the Lord who saves us and keeps us.
We are right to sing songs of His grace that is shed on this
land, and His blessing that sustains us as a people. We
are right to pray and even to cry out, God, bless America!
God, save America! God, help our nation! If not for
the mercies of the Lord we would never have been a nation at
all, and we certainly would never have survived as a people.
May the Lord, in His great kindness, continue to help us, to
draw us back to Himself, and to keep us alive as a nation.
May He forgive our foolish hearts, our ridiculous arrogance, and
our terrible sins. May He keep us in the safety of His own
good hands and not leave us to the whims of politicians or to
the desires of our enemies. Amen.
