The Amazing Power of Praising God in Song
When we sing praises to God with an honest heart, we are
advancing the light of God against the powers of evil.
More than anything else, our genuine worship of God is powerful
against the lies and bold delusions of the enemy.
Jesus Christ is Lord of all that exists. He is Lord over
every kind of power. Even the enemy must kneel before the
Lord of Glory. Yet here on planet earth it often seems
that evil is winning. While it is true that God permits
sinful acts to be committed, and He allows His own children to
suffer at times, we must never forget that Satan is a liar and a
thief. The enemy of God and man cannot express the truth
because his heart is fully evil and dark.
What this means in every day life is that we must not allow
ourselves to believe that darkness may somehow win. That
is a lie. There is no night strong enough to successfully
resist the dawn. Skies may grow dark in storms and in
times of calamity when smoke fills the air. But God sends
the light and the rain to wash away all the darkness. Any
evil that occurs in this world will always come to an end.
Every dark storm that rages against us will pass. Even
death itself is swallowed up in victory.
Our prayers of faith are powerful weapons against the forces of
evil. Very powerful. Yet we often fail to pray when
that alone can turn the tide. Our hearts are easily
troubled, easily shaken, easily convinced that nothing and no
one can help us.
Praising God in songs of worship can change the very way we see
the day — and the night. Why else do you suppose Paul and
Silas were singing praises to God in the night while locked up
in jail? They had been doing the will of God, bringing the
gospel message to Philippi, a town in need of God. When
they did an act of kindness, releasing a young lady from demonic
abuse, they were promptly arrested and beaten, and then jailed.
No doubt, their hearts were troubled. But God's grace in
their lives enabled them to lift up their voices in songs of
worship and praise to the Lord.
Did all that singing do any good? You will have to decide
for yourself. The Scripture tells us that the jail was
struck with an earthquake, so that the bonds of the prisoners
were opened. Everyone was free. Then the jailer came
in to see if anyone was alive and he ended up being won to faith
in Jesus Christ. In fact his entire household was
baptized. Paul and Silas were released the very next
morning, with apologies from the authorities.
Genuine praise sets us free to hope and believe, even when all
seems lost. It is more than a mere change of attitude or
outlook. It is the power of God at work in us, enabling us
to pray and trust God in confidence. And even when our
songs are weak at first, because our hearts are trembling with
fear, the Lord honors our efforts and gives us courage to raise
our voices in song. The battle, after all, is never really
ours. It is the Lord's, and He will grant us victory over
the enemy through the power of Jesus Christ. Our part is
to believe and to stand firm with God. Singing genuine
songs of praise to the Lord helps us to do just that.
