through the darkness over the world into a foreign mission
field.
To the Bible-believing Christian,
foreign missions and missionaries are often part of daily
prayers and usually part of church activities in some way.
One can often tell just how spiritual a church is by the
attention they give to sharing the gospel at home and around the
world.
The life of a missionary is one of
sacrifice for the larger good. Sometimes a call to a far
away mission field is a very personal thing and sometimes it
involves the whole family. When it involves a family, the
children and spouse are also asked to sacrifice their lives for
the sake of the gospel.
There are many kinds of Christian
missionary service. Sometimes a mission is established
primarily to provide humanitarian help, such as food, clothing,
shelter. Other missions are set up to bring the light of
the gospel of Jesus Christ to regions of great darkness. A
gospel mission may be set up in any American city, for example,
or in any foreign land. Whether near or far away, the work
of sharing the gospel is often met with steady and sometimes
severe resistance. Satan never willingly gives up
territory he claims as his own.
God does not really need people to
help Him in any of His work. He is all powerful, well able
to accomplish any kind of miracle. But He invites us as
His children to participate with Him in His work in various
ways. he may call on us, for example, to give a dollar a
year to a specific mission work. He may lead us to give a
dollar a day, or a dollar an hour. He may direct us to
give up everything and go to a place we we had never even heard
of before.
Many missionaries have given their
lives, and some have died in the service of sharing the gospel
in hostile circumstances of some kind. Not one missionary
life has ever been sacrificed in vain.
If God is calling you to give more
attention to mission work, then you owe it to yourself and to
the Lord Jesus to obey Him. Pray and seek God's direction.
Talk to your pastor, your family, the Christians in your local
church. Discover God's will and do as He directs.
Your life will be the richer for it, and many other lives may
also be changed as a result of your obedience.
