What does it really mean to be a Christian? Does
it mean that we are part of some huge religious group, or that
we tend to believe certain things politically? Does it mean that
we are genetically prone to feel a need for God? Does it mean
that we are followers of a religious or ethnic tradition, either
Jewish, Hispanic or of some European or American heritage?
Sociologists, students of religion and other may
try to make just about any case for one of the above ideas or
some other argument. But in reality, a Christian (as the Bible
first records the term) means that we are followers of Jesus
Christ Himself, that we have received and agreed with the gospel
message and that we are born-again, spiritually regenerated by
God Himself. In other words, we belong to Jesus.
Now, a Christian is very often also a member of
some local Christian fellowship or congregation. Ideally, a
Christian will be taught and will believe certain doctrines of
teachings about God and Christ, about the church and the
Christian walk, and about the world. But with or without such
membership and teaching, a true Christian is a person who
belongs to Jesus.
I belong to Jesus. He is my Savior. Not because
the church says so, or because I fell better if I say that, but
because Jesus says so. God says so. The Bible says so. And God's
Holy Spirit within me says so, moving me to call God my Father
and Jesus my Lord. I hope that you also belong to Jesus.
